The Whipping Man

It is April 1865, Passover, and American slaves have been set free throughout the South. A Jewish Confederate soldier returns from the war to find that his home is in ruins and that his family has disappeared. Only two former slaves remain. As each man contemplates an uncertain future, they are forced to face the truth about their past, and the complexity of freedom.

Starring: Frankie R. Faison, Brandon O'Neil Scott, and Douglas Scott Sorenson.

Following the world premiere at Luna Stage, The Whipping Man received productions at Penumbra (Saint Paul, MN), 2009; The Old Globe (San Diego, CA), 2010; Barrington Stage (Pittsfield, MA), 2010; Manhattan Theatre Club (NY), January 2011; Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati (OH), January 2012; Kansas City Rep (MO), March 2012; Center Stage (Baltimore, MD), April 2012, and Theatre J (Washington, DC), April 2012.

According to Theatre Communications Group, The Whipping Man was the third most produced play of the 2012-13 Season in the United States.

Matthew Lopez was awarded the 2011 John Gassner Playwriting Award by the NY Outer Critics Circle for The Whipping Man.
