We have never used the word “community” lightly, but the last few years have shown us more deeply than ever what our community means to us, and how much being in community matters. As we emerge from the pandemic, we are grateful to welcome you–our community–back into the theatre for inspiration, connection, and renewal.
At Luna, we bring communities together for artistic events that create understanding and change. Throughout the pandemic, we continued to inspire our community through virtual and outdoor events, but there is nothing that compares to the magic of throwing open our doors and welcoming audiences back to our theatre!
This spring, we bring you powerful new plays that speak to the most urgent issues of our time. Next on our MainStage is Nikkole Salter’s Torn Asunder, inspired by true stories of formerly enslaved people’s quest for family reunification post-emancipation. Then, Jenny Mercein’s Two Elizas explores womens’ fight for bodily autonomy from the 1840’s to today.
Meanwhile, our community-based, site-specific performances, Secret Cities, will continue to center undertold stories. This year, we focus specifically on the history and current controversy surrounding The Howe House, the first property owned by an African American and formerly enslaved person in Montclair. We are collaborating with multiple community stakeholders across generations to build a performance that speaks to this moment and explores how we understand and memorialize our communities’ complex history.
Our classes and camps for youth and adults continue to flourish, and we have been thrilled to welcome high schoolers back to the theatre for student matinees and to expand our Teen Conservatory. Our weekend and evening classes support learners at all levels, and we recently launched the region’s first stage combat program for kids!
To make these theatre experiences accessible to everyone in our community, all programs at Luna are Pay-What-You-Wish. Please consider supporting this bold commitment to equity and arts-based resilience, and making a donation to support Luna Stage’s 2023 season.
Thank you for being part of our community!
