As a graduate student at University of Washington, Hirabayashi refused the US government’s orders to forcibly remove and incarcerate all people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast. As he struggled to reconcile his country’s betrayal with his passionate belief in the U.S. Constitution, he began a journey of principled resistance that would take him all the way to the Supreme Court.
